September 1, 2009 to Mom
well the first week has gone well. it was a bit slow. we had alot of meetings. i got there Monday which was a normal day then Tuesday we had a meeting, then p-day, then Thursday we left for Singapore for a meeting for zls then came back Friday night so most of our week was shot but this week should be better and it has been thus far. I'm starting to get more used to the area so its going well.well the pictures last week came but i couldn't open any of them. if i tried it forced me to log out for some weird reason. so i didn't get to see them.ma, ill get back to you about the favorite scripture. ill tell ya next week.
here in kota kinabalu we use buses and taxis and walk. its different but a nice change especially for my rump. that seat on my bike was so uncomfortable in kuching haha.sad thing about the bike is that i got to a certain fitness level and just stopped because we only went a certain speed and there were no real hills or anything so i wasn't in very good shape really haha. but here theres a gym! so we've been going there in the mornings and working out. its been very nice.
ya my comp is interesting. the first week i made all the conversation. if i didn't talk we didn't talk. he can carry on a conversation but if i don't start the convo , no talkin haha. but the other day i wanted to test him to see how long he would go without talking. It was all day long. it was weird but whatever. i decided i had better just talk so i do again haha.but other good news i think. there will be two other elders in the house this Friday so that will give the apartment some more life. but i do like elder Compton. he is a good elder.well sounds good about the visit with Deanna. i sure like her. Paul was a card and she is just a sweet lady.this is true mother you are a part of the rs. make James play! haharosy is a cute name. i like it. that's the name of a singer i like very much. Rosy Thomas..
well the address here is:
D07-01 marina court resort condominium
kota kinabalu 88000
Sabah malaysiacan
send to there if you want. i just thought would be easier to go to singapore.
well special requests. Shannon a while ago sent me some delicious baskin robin mint chocolate chip hard candies and they were delicious but my favorite thing to do was give them to people to try since theres nothing like that here. so bags of american things that wouldn't be here would be cool to let people as well as little old me try haha. so anything you can think of like that would be nice.o and before i forget. i have a story that will for sure make you happy.
about 2 weeks before i left kuching we met a family. a young couple with a young baby. there names were christy and sulvester. both very great people. they will be baptized in 2weeks or so, which is awesome but not the point of the story. sulvester, although he was so awesome he had a problem with smoking. and one day i was thinking about how i could help him to stop. i was reading in preach my gospel about addiction recovery and it told us to imagine taking something we always do, some habit like cracking your knuckles, biting your nails etc and just stopping all of a sudden and imagine how hard it would be. which couldn't even compare to the addiction smokers face. well i thought, what do i always do as a habit. and I'm sure you know mom. since kindergarten..." MATTHEW!! you quit that!! your gonna get cancer!" hahawell i explained to him about that and how i had bit my cheek since i was 5 and ever since then until now. we all got a good laugh about it, but it ended up being serious, where we promised eachother we would stop our habits our "addictions". it was hard. but after about 3 days i didn't do it any more and i haven't since. the best part, about a week and a half later sulvester stopped too. it probably wasn't because of me, but i hope it helped. i called him every night and reported with him on my progress as well as his. you would be happy to know that ive stopped doing that mom.
I'm happy to hear about Gerry. I'm sure he will do wonderfully there.well thank you so much to grandpa. Johnson i appreciate him so much. i was just thinking about that the other day about helping with my mission $. i am very thankful to him. o man ma when is you foot going to get better? just keep taking care of it.I'm off now to eat some delicious Indian food. hahawell madre i hope all is well back home. i love you and pray for y'all always. have a great week ok!

hello mumsy,
well i did get transfered. after 8 months in kuching i am now in the state of sabah in a city called kota kinabalu or kk whateva haha. ive noticed a pattern thus far and that is that i have served thus far in cities that start with the letter k. klang, kuching, kk. kinda funny. well i am a zone leader now. i think its funny. my new companion is elder compton. he was in my mtc group. he was elder schneiders companion.hes a good fellow. hes pretty serious from time to time but i still like him.hes from Arizona. but thus far i really like it here. we live in a nice apartment with a view of the south china sea. ill send pictures eventually. sorry its been so long. i just never remember to bring my camera.
o ya sorry also to Erick. i meant to say happy birthday a while back but it slipped by. sooorrryyy eeaaaiiiirrrr beeeeeeaaaarrrr haha. hope you had a good b-day gravy master.well that's neat you had a dream about me ma. i wonder what i was off to. work as what. interesting.well sounds good that your foot is doing better now. keep up the good work.
well thank you for the loot. i got an over weight charge and had to pay 50 ringgit. like 15 American or something. but it was still annoying because i think in ringgit now and that's alot fo money! ahah.camera is working well. its quite nice. I'm trying to take more pictures lately than i have so i can remember things better, since I'm not so diligent in my journal efforts even though i try. i also have a book of remembrance. yes i finally gave into it. i thought it was funny at first but i got one too where i have people write in it and leave a picture too. it will be a good journal as well.Daniele toleman is going to college hu? thats kinda funny indeed.
but the new area is good . its a mix it seems of east Malaysia and west. its like a nice city with good food and your surrounded by native people from Borneo. west Malaysia only has foreigners or Muslims and Sarawak has all natives but i was in the country haha. so its a mix of both. its been thus far nice and i hope it continues the same.OK I'm about to go get some food. I'm starved haha! ok ma i love you i hope you have a great week. if you ever want to send anything you can just send it to Singapore. it will get there for sure and i can just get it later! talk to ya later!

good to hear its cooling off at home. here we are on the ocean so from what i have seen thus far it is cooler here than in kuching. so my first couple of days have been nice.you talking about moms cookies made me hungry. i hope sandy enjoyed them( said in jealous sarcastic voice) haha.no sound system at church? what happened? the sound system in kuching was terrible. it was so muffled and hard to hear. yes you can have a loud voice when you want to haha.well I'm glad to hear Carl is getting to business. i like that little clown. hopefully he keeps on going. Joe needs a good example. I'm pretty sure he does exactly the same stuff Carl does so if 1 goes i bet both do.well its too bad you didn't hear about Gerry yet. i was excited to hear about him.
mission president Johnson...ohh better not say that too loud ill curse you haha. well all is well here pappy. ive just been meeting alot of the members here as well as a few investigaros mixed in. elder Compton is kinda a dry fellow so I'm trying to bring some life into the appointments and thus far its been really fun. i don't know if i told you but ive acquired a little arsenal of card tricks hah. they love them here and its fun to see them get so surprised. getting that relationship of trust with members and investigators is so important. well everything is good here. happy and healthy. i hope you are too dad. have a good week!
love you,

well that is very cool i have a little nephew (Miles). he will be kickin it old school by the time i get back, walkin around probably and starting to talk up a storm. and clair bear. she sounds like a character. i look forward to seeing pictures next week.wow ma you and pappy have been busy with that little truck.128 thou hu? haha just kidding.i think i have that same relationship with duke. love fear. you never know when hes going to come charging into your room and leap up on the bed "...dingle dingle dingle, fwoop......boom, ahh! o, hi duke." haha.almost every morning like that.well that sounds good that your foot is doing better. just take it easy and everything will go fine. the human body is a neat thing in being able to repair itself. whats cool is your bone will grow back even stronger where it broke. there will be a thicker layer of bone material where the break was. i think that is very neat.ya elder merrill and i smoothed some things out. things still aren't perfect but were trying. i just think he hates being a junior companion. i really don't understand why. its not like i am IN CHARGE haha. most of the time we do what he wants. but i just don't think he likes the idea of being the "junior comp" pretty funny. I'm more than ok to be the junior comp.but lucky for him we've heard that he will be training here soon and i will be getting transferred to sabah. a place called kota kintabalu which is where i will have to be a zone leader if i get transfered there. not a whole lot of fun but we shall see. that's all just rumors that we have heard, and not certain, but it sounds likely that i will be getting transfered soon.thats ok i have been here for a long time. im sure the members are tired of my face by now hahaha.well not everyone is converted to the word of wisdom. but most people who get baptized remember that, most prominently as what they learned from the elders. not about the plan of salvation, eternal families, or the gospel of Jesus...its just annoying they cant remember the other things as well as those 5 things haha.its pretty crazy. Ive been out for a year august 27 crazy stuff indeed. the first year went way fast. It seemed really fast but if i think about it it feels like forever since I've been home. but at the same time it went by fast if that made any sense haha.we had a wonderful baptism last week. her name is Reeta. she is really cool and is going to be a strong member i know it. her whole family is Anglican but she was willing to make changes despite that. i was very proud of her.ok mom well thank you for your letter i hope your ankle continues to heal well. have a great week!
love you,

sounds like you had a good time in vegas! that sure would be fun to see all them. good old Miles. little kids are like the best part about here haha. they are so funny. theres a little girl about 4 years old who is the niece of a member but the little girl herself is a muslim because of her parents. but the little girl always comes to church with the auntie. her name is siti sahara about as muslim a name as you can get haha. its funny because since she started going to church and learning stuff she would always tell her muslim parents, lets pray before we eat, and stuff like that haha. very funny.little kids are pretty darn cool.
thats too bad you had to go home so quick. but i bet you had a good ride home with doo. did you have any fun experiences with duke jumping on your lap while driving when you didnt expect it? those were always fun times haha.well that sounds good about gerry. hope i get to hear about it next week. i hope he goes somewhere neato. i had hoped he was gonna come here but then i realized his blood sugar thing probably wouldn't let that happen.ya I've been reading in Matthew as well. i read the b o m a few times and now i figured id start out with the new testament. i hope i can finish it by December at the latest so we shall see. its just kinda hard to get alot read because theres so many notes i have to take as i read. so if i can read a chapter or 2 in an hour I'm lucky.but thus far I'm in Matthew 25. good stuff indeed.
i get surprised sometimes by the sharpness of Jesus's words but i suppose he had to for the audience he had, and often times he says things that are vague so without alot of pondering and or usage of additional scripture the authentic meaning could easily be ascewed . I'm thankful for additional scripture and especially now the Joseph Smith translation. i used to be really weirded out by it. wondering why he changed the scriptures...but i just didn't understand then, and my testimony wasn't what it should have been. but now i get really excited when i see that little jst at the bottom because i get to see what it really means. its soo cool. like i forget the chapter maybe 23 its speaking on marriage and it makes it sound like after death there is no marriage, like no one is married in heaven, but from the d&c and the translation we clearly see that is not the meaning. i am very grateful.
Joseph Smith was an amazing man. i like the parable of laborers as well. that's a hard lesson but a good one.well pappy I've heard word that i most likely will be getting transferred here soon. not confirmed yet but maybe it was the same in your mission maybe not, but rumors get started and i heard that I'm getting transferred to sabah. to a city called kota kintabalu. its kinda the best place you can serve if you go to sabah, so im excited. not to be bad or anything but im also excited to get a new comp...shh don't tell anyone haha. if i do go to sabah my comp will be someone from my mtc group elder compton. not many people like him but we got along pretty good. once again i am excited but will be happy no matter where i go even if i stay here. Ive been in this area for 8 months already. what was the longest you stayed in an area dad? ok well ill talk to ya later dad. thanks for the letter! i love you. give duke a pat on the head for me.

we are working with several families right now who seem promising to come back to church. as well as several new families and individuals who will be baptized shortly. well last saturday that little girl who was wearing the beads who was wearing the pinkish dress i think and her mom got baptized. the dad and the brother will be in the following weeks. very exciting. that was a very nice baptism. the moms name is rana and the girl is lilyamau. they're both very smart and wonderful people.
elder griffin and i are still doing very well, still not been transfered thank goodness haha. one of the less active families we just met with one of the girls is about 30 years old and her name is matron. she speaks english really well and her attitude and way of talking reminds me so much of Becky! they're like the same person except she's brown! haha. they will be back at church shortly i am sure. ok well thanks for the letter mom i hope you solve your email problem shortly! love you all and hope you're having a good week!

how is everyone! i will be writing two letters in response to your two this fine day. well news is the flip flops have not yet arrived....so well see. ill let ya know. ill just buy some here if they dont come. it might be hard fining a size big enough though haha.
i just asked you to send some because i loved those sandals i had back home.well if its a indian restorant your in luck because i love indian food. too bad its not malaysian but indian food is delicious. you should get tanduri chicken if they have it, naan! oooo naan. its just like thin bread wiht garlic or cheese or somehting. chicken briani is always good as well. but o hear there is a indonesian restorant in old town. you should try and find that if you and dad are ever just on a whim wanting to go to old sac and want to try something new.
i havent bought the clothes yet. im waiting for a price. i have two people. and whoever is cheeper haha.i have a sword like thing i already took to singapore so i dont forsee any problems.the maid is undetermined as of yet. shes still trying to convice the boss. we shall see. ill let ya know later. but this weekend that little girl that was wearing the beads the one that looks older that is, and her mom are going to be baptized so thats exciting. the dad still has a problem with smoking but hes already cut back dramatically. he will be baptized soon as well. well off to the next letter haha.

you just had spring break hu? you lucky one. sounds like you had a good easter though. your first ham hu? you sound like grandma johnson! your making hams now!thats good to know ken was there. how is that little guy kenny? ken where are you located these days? i hope you get that job. have you been thinking about doing a county fire job maybe? hu. keep me up to date.haha ya those videos were pretty funny.
speaking of kenny, that little fat chinese boys name was ken haha. he was hilarious. his dad was an investigator for a while and we went on bike rides with ken before our lessons with his dad. it was fun.ill probably send a new cd home in a while.
ok sounds good about the package. it should get here shortly. is there jerky in it? haha jk.g
ood for gerry durnall. i really hope all goes well for him. thats really cool there will be 3 guys from plvl ward all serving at the same time. good stuff.
haha yesterday we had a funny experience. we were riding our bikes and a school bus/van thing went buy us and a little chinese boy stuck his head out the window, waved to us and yelled profain words at us haha. he didnt take into account that we were going the same way as him and his bus was going slow haha. so we chased after the bus and i got along side it and proceeded to teach him a lesson on manners at high speeds, and telling him to watch his mouth and dont say that again . he looked pretty scared...hahha. needless to say he probably didnt understand english, but it made us feel better ha.well all is well here, i feel good and healthy. the work is going along well.
i love you all very much!

i just got a letter the other day from dave and he has been emailing me too. he sounds like he is doing great. im proud of him. i have been feeling prety good lately. nothing to complain about. the work is very good here. it was slow for a little bit but things are picking up. the members are helping alot. how did that go with the inactive member that you and dad had been helping with? I know members make a huge difference. just a few weeks ago we were contacting and one lady was super rude and didn't want anything to do with us. it turns out her husband has a sister who is a member in another branch. this member refered us and took us over. all of a sudden, she was very polite, let us in, and we are now currently teaching her and her family. i now know how important members are to missionary work. im sure the missionaries need all the help that they can get there ma. always be on the look out to share. don't ever be scard to. ok well, i love you mom, and i love you all. hope your all having a good week and ill talk to ya next week.

well today i am in singapore on my visa run. things are kinda busy and don't have a lot of time haha. but singapore is singapore. clean place full of alot of really interesting people from all over the world. i met a phillipino telemarketer last night and i asked her why her english was so good and i said she sounded like and american, and she said its because i talk to americans all day. and i thought to myself it was you all those times!!! hahazone conference went very well. it was all very spiritual and a good learning experience. yes president skelton was there. he's leaving for home in june or july. it should be interesting what the new president does for changes. thus far i have only eaten once since arriving here and yes it was delicious. it was indian food...i can't find any in kuching and it was to die for haha.
yes i can listen to cd's and if you want to send it if you like/ i'm sure its appropriate and i'm sure i could listen to it. the mission's not to strict about it. as long as it doesn't distract or take away from the spirit. I can listen. And yes if you want to send that vegitable stuff. that would be good. elder griffin and i have been looking to get more vegitables and fruits.well thank you sister clark. i dont really know her but thank you. and i just took out 100 sing which is probably about $80 us because everything is super expensive. so if you checked again eventually that would be good.well the lizard was interesting. it tasted like tuna haha. ok sorry i can't write you too dad but i don't have any time to write another letter right now. i love you all and hope you're having a great week. bye!

well thats good to hear about david. he's in the right place. and yes this little branch is growing. its doing well. just across town they are going to build an actual church building for 1st and 3rd branches. so 2nd branch (my branch) will still be in a large shop block, but that shows progress here in kuching and its exciting.we don't really have to give talks so much as we just get called on all the time to expand on ideas in class and stuff. its interesting. but nope not too many talks.well it sounds like maryanns funeral went well. thats good to know. and sounds pretty crazy about judy. its a small world i guess.
about the malaysian food...i haven't ran into alot of really awesome food here. i eat fried noodles and fried rice. when i was saying how much i loved the food in west malaysia that is because i was eating indian food so i wish you luck at that restuarant. its probably better than it is here haha. i mostly just want you to go there to ask them if there are actual people from malaysia there so i can come home and talk to them haha. so good luck!! hahawell all is well here its been raining a fair amount. O! crazy story i almost forgot! so yesterday we followed a recent convert into the jungle and trapped monitor lizards!!! sooo cool. we caught one and we're going to eat it tomorrow.i have a bunch of pictures and videos i will send home one day. so much fun. i dont think i need anything ma. thank youok fam i love you all and hope your all happy and healthy.

well sounds like your having an interesting time over there with everything. i hope your feeling better today. and you should make sure to tell me if its a boy or a girl! come on little boy! if it is you should name him matt as well so there can be MASSSS confusion haha.
about those questions...it probably wont be to interesting haha. breakfast usually consists of soy milk and oatmeal...pretty boring. lunch is some kind of little shop food, either fried rice or noodles, but its not really like american versions of either. dinner...same haha. unless we eat at an appointment.best thing i have eaten by far was found over in west malaysia. they dont have it here and its a tanduri chicken and naan dinner. sooo delicious. im going on a visa run in two weeks to singapore and im excited because i get to eat some. they dont have it in east malaysia for some reason.
ive eaten some weird stuff. nothing too crazy as of yet. i ate snails the other day. they were pretty tasty. one thing i was scard to eat and ate anyway much to my dissmay was some pork (mostly just fat) that had hair and stuff all in it. turns out my not wanting to eat it but eating anyway was a bad choice. i was sick for 2 days afterward haha.
personality? i dont know maybe. i know ive learned so much gratitude for my family and the home in which i was raised and how truely blessed i and this family are. being around so many people that have little or nothing but still want to give is so humbling.i think you can just say i just miss moms cooking. i have eaten the same things since ive been here. i just miss mom's cooking.....haha.my comp right now is really a good elder. we just get along. it plain and simple we both know what our purpose is here and we get along at the same time. its quite nice. ok shan i hope that opend up a little into my life here. i love you and ill talk to u later!

well sounds like you all had a fun time having a little get together! i miss those. they always sound like so much fun. wo! that would be crazy if all 3 were going to have kids around the same time again. yes yes 3 boys this time haha. ok mom ill keep that in mind when finding a career. no promises tho! haha.woo you saw a malay resturant in folsom!?!?! i am bamboozeled and i hope that its real. you must go there. and tell me how it goes. from the name it sounds like malay singapore and indonesian food.
ok i should be sending it (a package from Matt to me, note from Me, Mary/Mom :-) ) home here pretty soon. i want to find some more stuff to put in it before i send it off.ya i havent really taken much $ out lately so it may be a little bit different. im planning on buying some more souveneirs here soon since im going to singapore i can drop some stuff off there. so maybe you should check it just to make sure.
thats really sad about Maryann. i didnt know her too incredibly well. but i do know that she was a good nice person.good to know she was still strong in the church when she went. although i didnt know her that well that is still very sad for her family.well good job helping them out mom. thats good you're looking out for people.
i wish you could come here and help. there is soooo much need. i would love to come back here after my mission and just help people. as of right now as a missionary we can't really give them financial aid. which sometimes it is so tempting. but we can't. that would be something i would love to be able to do. it is so funny to think about how those people were spending $16 US on tamales.....that much money could go soooo far here.thats more money than it would take to feed a family of 4 for a week. or more. thats pretty sad people were so unwilling to give.(note from Mary, donations to a family who had no money for propane)well i agree this year is already going by really fast.
i can't believe i've already been out for 6 months. Am i one of those missionaries that its like...woo! hes already been out that long?? or is it, its only been 6 months? because for me its like woo! ive been out 6 months haha. ok mom thanks for the message. it was good to hear from you and how you're all doing.
ok love ya lots!elder johnson

good to here from you mom. well sounds good theres rain finally there. there hasnt been as much here lately. sounds like you need it over there. that sounds good about the new system for windows. hopefully it will be better then vista haha.ya members not coming to church because of rain is funny but all too true. and nope, not even flooding.but ya we had the baptism of chinpow 2 weeks ago, another totally awesome family of 4 was baptized this last weekend, and another family will be baptized this weekend as well! its soo exciting. they are all awesome people. i hope they all can keep on enduring after we leave. we are realllly trying hard to not let these people get converted to missionaries instead of the gospel. i think that is one of the huge problems here in kuching as well as the state of sarawak here in malaysia. because these people so often have these white guys coming into there homes speaking these peoples own language and they just become so totally amazed with the missionaries that they can't focus on anything else. it really is to bad. so were trying really hard to make these people search for a testimony before baptism and i think its going well.the branch responded really well to the prayers. i actually got to confirm someone in malay the other day which was the first time in malay for me as well as probably one of the first times in the branch for it to be heard. everyone thinks the confirmation of the holy ghost has to be done in english so thats what all the locals do. but no one understands it. so i got to do that in malay as well as the blessing . it was such a sweet experience. i could feel the spirit so strong.the couple is new. they are from canada. they are pretty darn hilarious.i must admit.but ya we do service projects every now and again. whenever people ask for help we do that and we always ask if people need help with anything before we leave from meetings with them. but ya. maybe one or two times a month we do some kind of service project. sometimes more.ibon, is coming along ok. its getting to the point i can understand it alright. theres still alot to go. can you believe pretty soon here ill have been out for 6 months? thats pretty crazy right?no signs of transfers yet. i hope we dont get one for a while. but i will be going to singapore here in about 3 weeks for my visa run. about pictures i put all my pictures on a cd. i made two copies of it and im going to send one home to see if it makes it. ill probably send your birthday presend home with it ma! even though its pretty early.well every day we wake up at 7 as a mission thats the time for some reason. then we excercise for 30 minutes, eat breakfast, get ready, study personally for 1 hr, companionship for 1 hour, language for 1 hour, eat lunch, then we get goin. we get home by at the latest 10 oclock, plan for the next day, then go to sleep by 11. thats our day in a nutshell.well that sounds great about grandpa...feeewww. and no worries about the package ma. sounds good about shanny. she sent me a picture of the little rascal now. looks good. can they tell whether it is a boy or girl yet? sounds like fun they're all comin home. i miss those family get togethers!well everything sounds good, thanks for letting me know about the retirement thing dad. sorry i don't have time to write back. this is taking forever for some reason today haha. but everything sounds like you are all doing well! i hope and pray your all doing well. im still tryin to take care of myself. we've decided we're going to try and eat healthier so that will be good. ok, well i love you all! have a great week!elder johnson.

February 17, 2009 to Family
i appreciate the pictures ma. funny pictures of the dog. did you recently find out how to do the little words in the picture? pretty funny. well that sounds pretty foreign to think about snow. I think right now i would just about die in the snow because ive been so warm for so long. its the same deal here about the weather except its for the rain. if its raining a little bit on sunday theres like no one there. Its funny how scared malaysians are of rain. you'd think because its such a part of daily life here they would get used to it, but nope.
but good news the rain has been alot less lately so that means no more blaming not coming to church on weather. but sounds like you will keep on in the snow haha.good news! this week we'll be having another baptism of a family. last week we had the guy named chinpow, not sure if i told you that but we did. this new family is really good. they are all awesome people full of good questions and they have already assimilated into the branch. going to parties and meetings and what not. they seem to already have alot of friends. theres a mom, dad, daughter, and a little boy. theres also another little boy and an older son but one is too young and the older just is never around to learn about the church.
but things are still going very well here. the work is moving along well and we're having alot of fun. the missionary couple here is so funny. they are so opinionated. elder standford is a super funny old man. he doesn't mean to be, and they are just such canadians that he is hilarious. sometimes he says things that makes me think he knows how funny he really is haha. so i have begun to write down funny things he says throughout the day so i can remember them haha. good stuff.so is david leaving in march? thats so fast. that time from recieving your call to leaving is sooo fast. at least it was for me.o man.
i hope grandpas ok. that seems weird they are waiting 2 weeks! seems like they should get on it right away. well i'll be praying for him. i hope everything is ok. keep me up to date.ok sounds good about the pictures. I remember i had one in the mtc but i accidentaly left it there. so i need a new one to show people since they ask so much.finally looking for a new computer huh? its probably best you do just get a pc since all of our relatives have pcs. and even though macs are pretty nice it just makes problems if you have alot of computer interaction with others when they have pcs and you have a mac. but good luck!well last week elder griffin and i said the sacrament prayer in malay. it was such an experience. it felt really good to be able to say it in the language of malaysia instead of some foreign language. (even though malay is technically foreign as well...but they all speak it). but ya ibon is coming along. it is similar to malay but different enough to cause trouble.
i have since started learning some words and it is going along ok. nothing terribly fast or anything but its coming along.i also have a testimony of music mom. this sunday i had a malay hymn book so i got to sing out of that while everyone else sang english. it was really quite neat. but all is well here. im feeling healthy and everything is going along just fine. I really do love it here so much. i would be ok if i stayed in kuching my whole mission. its a wonderful place.ok well ill talk to ya all later hope you're having a wonderful week.
love, elder johnson

everything here in kuching is just fiiine. we've been having a good time here, elder griffin and i. we have been teaching alot of super wonderful families lately that are all planned to be baptized before the end of the month. I'm super excited for all of them .waadoo, this computer place is hot hahaha. last week we bought some pretty neato stuff! one thing i bought was an ibon sword, and blowgun! haha. there both so cool. and were going back there today because elder griffin feels like he wants to buy some more stuff before he goes home. speaking of Ibon stuff...
ive decided i'm going to learn Ibon. its a tribal dialect that is spoken here in east malaysia. most of the people here in sarawak if they are not chinese are ibon so i think it will be very bennificial seeing as they are the people who listen to our message. Its just kind of hard teaching them in malay seeing as its not even there language. malay is a language they were forced to learn when the malay people took them over and forced them to change. so i think learning Ibon will help alot.It should be fun.
o ya, i bought a reaaally cool purse bag thing i want to send you mom, with an elephant embroidered on it. its quite neatpoor kinster. dentists are not fun. but what can ya do. i hope shes feeling ok! she had to get put under? thats pretty crazy.don't worry mums. i recieved the package on monday and thank you very much. Elder griffin and i already devoured the jerky .that was funny how you cut off the tops. before i saw the note i was like...i guess she was kinda hungry...haha. but thank you for sending it. whatever address you sent it to is ok.well happy happy birthday to kenny g. I'm not sure if i said so last week, but incase i didnt happy birthday kenny. I hope you have a great day full of tasty food.
what! megans pregnant as well? why was that not made known to me? that was kind of casually just thrown out there like it was common knowledge haha. nope i hadn't heard. and congratulations megan! I hope you and shannooon are both doing well and happy.
well matt hiller I really hope all goes well for you ill be praying for you, and if i was there i'd go in the back of the testing area wherever you were for the physical and written parts with thunder sticks, hitting them really hardshouting your name...but alas i am here so i suppose some prayers will do haha.
what inspired the question about eric ellis? do you see that little guy putting around sometimes? if you do see him tell him hi for me. but no we don't email. i just have got letters from him a few times.well thank grandma for the valentines wishes and if i didnt thank her before will you tell her thank you very much for the christmas card. i appreciated it. it was sparkly..o ya ma if you could send me a family picture right quick that would be nice. i get asked all the time here to see a picture of my family but i dont have one. If you could do that i would appreciate it. one with or without me doesn't matter. im not sure if you've taken new family pictures since i've been gone. but if you could send some that would be nice in the mail if thats ok. ok fam sounds like alot is happening back home so i hope you are all happy and healthy and keeping up with things. I love you all and pray for you always. have a good week!

and i agree about the story about korihor being funny. and its not even like he got trampled by animals...it was like zoramites or something. i think of them as just a big old group of people running around aimlessly following a leader all saying "Meep!!" in unison, ooops there goes korihor. haha, you're right it is funny.but anyways. things are going very well here. we had 11 people at church last sunday. with those 11 people and there kids i think there were more non members than members haha.but the missionary work is going very well here. the people are just so accepting.
we have a theory here about the whole group seems like hagoth in the book or mormon. apparently some general authority told the people in new zealand they were decendents of hagoth. so we have a feeling that the people here are as well. because its so interesting how similar the native american traditions are with the native people of borneo and all of these countries for that matter. i think thats why they have the same sweet spirit and willingness to except the the gospel as south americans do. at least that's an idea we have...dad you should know over in klang i told that horse story to a recent convert when he was thinking about stop coming to church. im not sure if it all sunk in but he came to church again so id like to think it did haha.
o ya thats some crazy outfit youve got goin on there dad. you really went all out! so have you done alot of playing with the honour guard lately then? im really sorry everyone for not writing back to you all but i will try really hard next week. elder griffin and i are going to buy some cool borneo stuff today hopefully maybe i can send something home. and yes i think it was A3 mom. if you wanted to you can say something eventually to them. elder schneider and i were planning on just having you and his mom getting in contact a little while before we come home just to set things up. BUT! thats a long ways off so don't need to worry ma.
Ok i love you all so much and i will write more next week. hope you all have a good week!elder johnsono ya the package has not yet arrived, and has my letter arrived that i sent?

how are you all? i am doing just fiiine. another winter without much rain hu? i wish we could send some of the rain here to there. we have too much! its kindof a floody place.
yep elder schneider has moved to 3rd branch in kuching which is not too far. he just got transfered down the street haha. ill miss him but its ok. my new companions name is elder griffin. hes from utah, and he seems like a really good elder. very likeable. hes been out for about 17 or 18 months, so hes been around. things are going well with him though. so all this week has been chinese new year. which makes for difficult teaching because everyone is partying or they went back to their villages far away. but thankfully its starting to die down now.
right now we are teaching 4 families all of which are really good and will be at church on sunday. i am so excited about them. we have another young man being baptized this weekend named chinpo. im not sure if i told you but last week two of the sons of a recent convert family were baptized as well. everything is going quite smoothly here. I look forward to working with elder griffin alot. it should be good.but the new family timah and sulin and clarence are all doing reeeally well. they've been to church every sunday since we met and they have referred us to 3 other families and she told us there are more. they are sooooo good. the other family with all the little kids should be back today and we're meeting them tomorrow. i always love going to their house, its always alot of fun. thank you alot for the ideas mom. ill try and use some of those. also thank you to erick as well. glad to see most of the object lessons are the same still haha. good old bob calkins. give him a pat on the belly for me will ya? haha.
I'll let ya know about the package when it gets here.that grass hopper was a good 5 inches long. no joke. it was raksasa! that means huge haha.everything is good here. im healthy and loving the people so much. this really is an awesome area and i hope i can stay here for a long time. now there are only 2 elders in my house as opposed to 4 before. president skelton seems to think only 2 elders are needed for the areas 2 used to work in. pretty crazy. we ride our bikes about 25+ miles a day as opposed to about 15 max. pretty crazy but i love it. the new area is so cool and is filled with people whom i can tell are open and willing to learn. also that area is surrounded by big old mountains covered in jungle which is cool to look at haha.
ok fam i love you all and hope you're happy and healthy. alrighty ill talk to ya next wednesday! selamat tahun baru china! happy chinese new year! haha!
love you,
elder johnson

yes elder schneider and I are doing just fine together. the family that is to be baptized has been having a little problem with the dad just because he's not sure if he's ready. the mom and son are and they want to be baptized but we want them to be baptized together. so we may end up putting it off another week but we will see tomorrow when we give them an interview. we shall see. the eight investigators were from 3 different families so they were parts of families and one family.
this last week we only had two at church just because there was massive flooding throughout the area. so not many of them could come. so hopefully things will be better this sunday.im not sure if i told you but good news is, that indonesian lady i told you about before, sammy,is to be baptized this weekend back in klang! that is so exciting.
that sounds great about the missionaries back home. sounds like there doing better. that is still pretty crazy about jennifer. and now kurt is engaged too!! what? thats crazy talk! but thats good she asked you to take pictures! youll have to use your talents mum.the new bike is very nice! it was sad because we got these 2 really nice bikes and we had to spray paint them to make them less likely to be stolen. i felt bad. so the language is coming along well. sometimes its difficult but most of the time it just kinda comes out without thinking, its very interesting. it really is a gift of the spirit i know. because when im just talking with the other elders sometimes its hard to keep up but when talking to investigators and members it just kinda comes. it really is amazing.
so the shoes --that sounds like it might be ok to just get them here. i think they might not be too great of quality here but when the time comes i'll do what i need to. but my size is 11.5. yes i got those pictures from picassa. that little kinster what a rascall. dad i think i remember you telling us stories about some family in canada that fed you pieces of cooked up pork fat? well the other day i had my first experience with that haha. we stumbled upon a big old family of ibon people and we ended up giving them some pamphlets and a book of mormon and i think they felt really indebted so they brought us out a bunch of food, one plate of which was a plate full of pork fat, complete with pig hair still attached haha. o man, interesting stuff.but kuching is still quite amazing. i have been here nearly 3 weeks now and it still feels like i just arrived. i love it. So now all 5 of us elders from the mtc are now in east malaysia. elder compton and i were the last 2 to come here but we are all here now. all quite exciting. ok well i hope your all doing well and i hope you have a great week!
love elder johnson.
